After days of waiting for the right weather the team have been rewarded. This morning we woke to perfect conditions with the wind changed and the ice looking a little more forgiving. Snowbird 6 expertly reversed into the mosaic of moving ice that makes up the straits and was away. It was experimental going through the varying shades and depths of ice but the vehichle performed better than the team had dreamt of. High elation set in and 8 hrs later they are close to the international border with Russia – further than anyone has ever been before, still no nearer to getting full permissions to enter Russian space. They have a long dark night ahead of them but the base station will be waiting for any transmissions – it is a very exciting day.
